I remember the first time I watched the movie "Dragonheart" I was simply awe struck. The idea of a benevolent dragon befriending a man was simply fascinating to me. I decided right then and there that I wanted to write stories about good dragons.
Not long after that decision was made, Pharrgon, the golden dragon, was born. I loved him instantly. He was like my Falkor, the luck dragon (from Never Ending Story), except way cooler... and much more vicious.
When I began writing "The Dragon's Son", the protagonist was a girl. But, she just didn't fit the role properly. So, I sent her away and started looking for a new character. Pharrgon suggested a young, stubborn boy, and with that idea I created Keegan. Pharrgon loves him to death.
Once I had heroes, I moved on to the next step: finding the perfect world to put them in.
My sister and I spent a lot of time playing outside when we were children. Unbeknownst to us, we did a lot of Live Action Role Playing (LARPing). We created our own original characters and acted them out. We turned the farmyard into a world of our own, with people and fantastic creatures and monsters of every sort. We spent hours outside, going on grand adventures and daring quests in our beautiful world. It became our favorite place to be on earth, and we have many happy memories in that land.
I decided our world would be the perfect place for Keegan and Pharrgon.
But with every wonderful world comes a great evil.
Long before Keegan and Pharrgon came into existence, my sister and I encountered a darkness in our world: a malicious witch. We had many encounters with her when we were children. Some of our encounters transpired before she was evil, when she had a beautiful name and lived in a beautiful home, when she was generous and kind and we were all friends. Unfortunately, after a horrible tragedy, she became evil and betrayed us and her people.
My sister and I had a good time with her when we were little, so it only seemed right that she continue to be a troublesome nuisance for my beloved Pharrgon and Keegan.
And so, between a movie and childhood playtime, the "Tales of the Wovlen" series was born.
The first book, The Dragon's Son, was published March 3rd, 2014.
