The Beginning of the Tales
Three hundred years before the red dragon took the mountain of the Wovlen, and scattered the Wovlen people; in a time when the Wovlen people did not yet exist, two men were born who would change the world.
Both were born princes of their people, and both had to reach out and take their birthright from those who had stolen it from them.
The first man was Elord, son of Elon. He was born to the king and queen of Palad, a land of dragon riders. The year he was born, there was a great uprising in the kingdom. A mad dragon rider call Moroth spread the belief that dragons should be servants of men, and all free dragons should be slain. Many agreed with him, and so they rose up against the king and queen and killed all who opposed them, taking the riderless dragons and enslaving them. The king was slain, but the queen fled with a small group of dragons to a forest in a land far away. There, she raised Elord for a time until the king of that land learned of her existence. He went out to meet her and fell in love with her. He took her and Elord into his castle and made her his queen, officially adopting Elord as his son. The dragons, however, remained a secret.
Elord’s mother eventually had another child, a girl, and Elord grew very close to his sister, considering her to be his best friend. The two found a baby dragon egg as young children playing in the field, and they raised it together secretly in the castle, with their mother’s help. Their mother used the dragon to teach them the secret history of the dragon riders and to prepare them for the task of reclaiming Palad and setting the dragons free.
The second man was Weylen (WAY-len), son of Wolfgang, king of the barbarians. Weylen was raised to be a warrior, and he earned the title “mad wolf” at a young age for his fighting style. The barbarian people saw him as a hero, and this frustrated Wolfgang, who feared that his son’s popularity would cause the people to rise up and kill him to place his son on the throne instead. So, Wolfgang arranged for a group of his most trusted men to go on a hunt with Weylen and kill him during the hunt, making it appear to be an accident. However, one of the men in the group considered himself Weylen’s friend, and he convinced the others to sell Weylen as a slave to earn extra money, and then tell their king that they had killed him as they were hired to do.
Weylen was taken in chains far away from his home to be sold in the slave markets in higher society where he would fetch a handsome price.
Elord was wandering the markets one day when the slavers brought in a new group of slaves to sell. He saw Weylen and was instantly fascinated by the “wild man”. He watched as Weylen put up an impressive struggle with his captors, after which he was beaten harshly. Elord purchased Weylen, healed his wounds from his beating, and set him free. Weylen felt indebted to Elord, so Elord convince Weylen to travel with him to Palad and set the people and dragons free there, thus paying his debts to Elord.
After careful planning, in the dead of night, Elord, his sister, their young dragon, and Weylen left the city and set out on their quest. Their journey was perilous and difficult, building a bond between the foursome until they were all fast friends and deadly warriors.
In their travels, they were aided by the Farry (FAR-ee), Demitreah. She gave them guidance and healing, and introduced Elord to his future wife, another Farry (name currently unknown). Demitreah suggested that they enlist the aid of the Narcians (Nar-SEE-anns), people who could change their form into that of a giant wolf, cat, or a bear. With her help, they were able to contact the chief of the Narcians. He initially refused to help them, but his daughter, who could change into a wolf, was smitten by Weylen “mad wolf” and so convinced her father to change his mind.
With the powerful Narcians as allies, Elord marched a formidable army into Palad. In the battle to take High Tower, the dragon rider’s capitol city, Elord’s sister died. But her death ensured their victory, and Elord killed Moroth, thus ending his rein and scattering his followers.
After Elord becameking, he helped Weylen return home to his people. Weylen confronted his father and, after a struggle, cut off his head, thus becoming the king of the barbarians.
Weylen married the Narcian chieftan’s daughter, and they had twin sons called Wovlon (WOE-vlon) and Werren, and a daughter, Sarna. Wovlon’s descendants eventually moved South of the White Mountains, taking up residence in an inactive volcano and founding the Wovlen (WOE-va-len) kingdom. Werren went missing during a hunt at the age of 30, and was never found again.
Many years later, when Weylen and Elord were very old, the Farry woman, Demitreah turned to darkness. Several years before Demitreah met Weylen and Elord, she found a “Fallen Star”, a being who once dwelt in the heavens. He called himself Deyus (DAY-us), and he was the most beautiful creature she had ever seen. Though it was strictly forbidden, she took him in and sheltered him from her people. The Farry were the judges of immortal beings on earth, and any time a star fell, it was their job to find the star and bring it before the seat of judgement to learn the reason why it was cast from heaven and if it should be allowed to live among them or if it should be killed.
Deyus seduced Demitreah and planted seeds of discontent and bitterness in her mind against her people, filling her with desire for power. Her loyalty to him became unshaking.
Eventually, her people learned of his whereabouts. They took him, unaware of Demitreah’s involvement with him, and after bringing him to the seat of judgement, they found him to be malicious and therefore publicly executed him. Being immortal, however, his spirit did not fade or go into the afterlife. It was absorbed by a blood red Soulstone. Demitreah was devastated by his sudden execution, but she vowed she would keep the stone safe and find a host for Deyus to inhabit. During this time, she also learned that she was carrying his child.
Demitreah turned against her people, and she unleashed all of her powers, an act the Farry are forbidden to do. She devastated the holy Farry city, killing all in her path. She was confronted by the king, her father, but he would not use his powers against his daughter, and she killed him in cold blood. Her mother escaped with only a handful of Farry and fled to Palad, seeking help from Elord and the dragon riders.
Elord knew that Demitreah would not stop until she had killed all her people, so he and the dragon riders, in one night, moved from their land and relocated to a hidden base in the White Mountains where only dragons can fly. After he had ensured the safety of his people and the remaining Farry, he flew straight to Weylen and told him the terrible news.
Weylen did not believe Elord at first.
Demitreah did not stop with the destruction of her people. She went to Nenavaya (neh-nah-vah-yah), a human city sitting in the mouth of the White Mountain Pass, where all trade between the Northlands and the Southlands took place. She killed everyone in the city and, with the help of a dark sorcerer, she created monsters to guard the city and tunnel through the mountains in search of the remaining Farry.
All the people of the land, barbarians, Narcians, and dragon riders gathered together in one giant army to oppose Demitreah. Weylen held out hope that Demitreah could be changed, though. During the great battle, Weylen fought his way to Demitreah and confronted her. He tried to reason with her. She listened to him, and when he had finished, she revealed to him that the dark sorcerer helping her was in fact Deyus possessing Weylen’s lost son Werren. When she was certain she had broken Weylen’s heart, she killed him.
Elord saw Demitreah kill Weylen and flew into a rage. He attacked her and nearly died as she unleashed her powers against him, but the Narcian chieftain, in his feral bear form, used Demitreah’s momentary distraction and severely wounded her. Demitreah teleported herself away from the battle, and all believed that she was dead, and so the battle ended. However, Pass City was never reclaimed and the monsters Demitreah and Deyus created roam its streets to this day.
Elord buried Weylen and disappeared from the known world, and most believe that he succumbed to his grief over Weylen’s death and Demitreah’s betrayal. With him, the dragon riders also disappeared. With the Farry and dragon riders gone, the Narcians became the judges and guardians of the land.
While in hiding, Demitreah gave birth to a daughter, and she trained her to be a cunning warrior and skilled torturer. Many years later, Demitreah resurfaced with new monsters that she had specifically designed to kill the Narcians. In one night, she unleashed her monsters and killed half of the Narcians and enslaved the rest. None escaped her. Her attack on the Narcians was so swift and sudden, that no one had any idea what had happened to the Narcians. Because the Narcians were judges and guardians, with their sudden extinction, panic and disorder swept across the land like wildfire.
Demitreah once more tried to take over, but the people were able to band together, and with the help of the first Dayspeaker, they dealt Demitreah and her army a lethal blow. Demitreah was made mortal by the Dayspeaker, and was once more severely wounded. The Dayspeaker and a single dragon began to hunt her, so she fled to the desert and disappeared, and once more it was believed by the people that she was dead. She would not resurface again until 500 years later, after her daughter had captured and trained a red dragon to do their bidding. And that is where Keegan’s story begins.
